Tay began her art at the age of 15 when her mother and father encouraged her to take extra curricula art classes. With the continued encouragement and support of her family, who were in the medical proffession, meaning they had a real job, Tay pursued a University of Cape Town degree; Bachelors of Fine Art which she recieved in 1987.

Since creating her first art piece as a child, Tay has never stopped experimenting and believing in what she considers her life's calling.

N.B. Mixed media refers to the involvement of several types of material ie. ink, enamel, acrylic, pencil, chalk, oil, tempora, collage, found items etc.
