AN APPRECIATION OF ENAMEL

STUDIO NOTES ON ENAMEL I create these works with the canvas laid out on my studio floor. In a sense, my entire body is in the work, as I move over the surface whilst pouring the paint. Even though there is an element of chance and spontaneity to these works that fascinates me, I have to know exactly what I want and where I’m going when I create them because it is so easy to overwork these paintings and they then become a muddle. Purity and clarity is what I’m after and capturing an essence of pure energy and directness of form. The movement, angles and shapes in relation to the flat background is paramount to the overall tension and energy. Each shape and line I think through carefully before I pour and is decided on prior to the action so that the work appears spontaneous, yet the composition is sound and balanced.

EXPERIMENTAL I don't create paintings so that I can find a client and then celebrate my success upon a sale. This is a career and a discipline that I work on every day since I was a teenager. Like anyone who pursues a passion in life, I want to be better at what I do. I try new things like mixing paint materials and adding dirt or rocks, trash, mixed media paste, collage, photos, just stuff that is laying around and throw it all together and see if I can come up with something new. When I experiment I have to know what I am doing technically and try and create something that is balanced and interesting to look at. I like my art to be attractive as well as interesting. messy chaos and anti-establishment is not who I am, so my art doesn't reflect this art genre and looks more attractive and easy to live with. That's my personal opinion about my work. But the message in the work has the same tension, pleasure, pain, angst as any other accomplished artist, it's just spoken visiually different when it is born from my creativity. I am the first to admit that not everything I do is a good work, some of it is unrefined, some of it may be construed as decorative, but the whole point I am making is that I am sharing the results of my experimentation as a working artist without trying to convince the viewer to like everything I do. Just finding it interesting is enough for me.
