UPDATE BRITISH AND INTERNATIONAL FINE ART IS NAMED AND SHAMED IN THE THEFT OF TAY'S ART |
Over the years many kind and
concerned people have tried to help recover my 80+ peices of
art. Some have been in the gallery in the Spain and actually seen my work
there in person. I have had contact with lawyers who tell me that
unless it is a probono case and I have signed receipts and contracts proving
the theft, it is boils down to British and International Art Gallery
aka Dick and Liz Barton's word against mine. Unfortunatly for most
artists galleries don't honour contracts and usually work on a word of mouth
relationship. A Crazy Risk I know but even if a contract had been
signed I would have to have paid out thousands of Euros proving that
my art had been stolen. A cost I wouldn't be able to recover. |

The Tay Modern
opened its doors in Hermanus September 2007 to 250 guests who drank, ate, danced
and viewed Tay's latest artworks into the early morning of the next
day. It was a remarkable event and a first in Tay's career in that
at last, here was a space where she, as an artist, could be free
to be exclusive to herself and her work. It's three years
later and the gallery is still going strong with the hanging of a new
exhibition that will be showing through June and July. |

BONHAMS has chosen Tay's art for The South African Sale in October 2010 New Bond Street |
Tay met with organization officials in Cape Town
recently and has been invited to consign some of her work in the next South
African art sale planned for October 2010 in London. Bonhams' South African art sales have proved that the market for the best quality South African Art is now firmly established in London, the centre of the global art trade. Giles Peppiatt, Director of South African Art at Bonhams commented after the last sale in March: “Once again we have been delighted by the response from buyers. You would not have known in the saleroom today that we are cautiously emerging from the worst recession in 80 years. The mood was buoyant, the bidding brisk and the prices excellent. After five years of selling South African art I feel that this is not a blip or a fashion but the start of a long march to real international recognition and appreciation of this vibrant art from the tip of Africa.” |

BRITISH AND INTERNATIONAL FINE ART IS NAMED AND SHAMED IN THE THEFT OF TAY'S ART . . . |
British and International Art Gallery located in Marbella Spain steals 84 peices of Tay's art. After 4 years of non-communication from the gallery, "This is the only explanation I have left", say's Tay who faces the sad reality that 2 years of her art production are gone. "A whole period of my career has been taken from me and there is nothing I can do about it." The gallery, owned by Liz and Richard Barton set up shop in London in 2004 taking on various artists including Tay's work. By the middle of 2005 they had closed the doors to their London Gallery and without Tay knowing it, had taken all of her art to one of Spain's notorious British holiday resorts, The Golden Mile in Marbella, Malaga. Over the course of the next few years Tay and her husband repeatedly attemped to recover her work from British and International Fine Art and the purported £10, 000.00 the couple owes her in art sales, but to no avail. "When they, [Richard and Liz] see a South African phone number, they just don't pick up the phone any more.", says a frustrated Ben Chowney. At first the gallery assured Tay that they would stay in contact with her and that if she was unhappy with the arrangement she could have her work back at any time. After 3 years, It is obvious, this is not their plan as the couple have stopped returning phone calls, faxes and e-mails. Tay has confirmed that the gallery is open for business and continues to display her art because a couple that know Tay's work went on holiday in Marbella and happened to see her art in the gallery window. "What else can I do?, asks Tay, I have tried to find a lawyer who would help me, but because I am in South Africa and the gallery is in Spain, there is not much a lawyer can do from here and they [Liz and Dick] know it!'
