ARTIST'S NOTES ON
NEWBIES 2023

In terms of my new art and the art in this section,
I am often asked this question. Where do these "new/newbies" artworks come from? Do you invent them from a random chest of ideas or are they dreamed up of and then the next day created? My answer to my adoring fans and my not so adoring critics is that most of my work is born out of creating a body of work for an idea for a future exhibition. I do on average 5 exhibits a year. Every year! I gotta have art for them.

Some works in this so called 'Newbies' selection are art pieces that have not been resolved in decades that I have finally gotten around to resolving or there are those works that I did not like 10 years ago and I rework them to a point that I like them again. And then again, there are works that I feel are so iconic and once off, like the Melting Pot works or the Looking Glass panel, that they stay permanently in this section because they are New Ideas that never get old in my mind's collection.  But for the sake of the line up I have below, and for the satisfaction of the initiated and interested audience to this website, the Newbies section is a cut away glimpse, a little bit of an ordered list in terms of what I am thinking about art wise at this point in my career and at this point in my life.

ARTIST'S NOTES ON
REMNANTS OF A BROKEN ORDER
These works are about the conclusion of the story I have conveyed in this collection.  They are a unique combination of two styles embracing, languid pools of colourful pigment nestled in the crevices of thin black lines, floating peacefully within the world of the raw canvas: a new world, a new order.  These pieces emanate from a sense of resolute calmness and compromise after severe conflict. When two opposites join they may create a better form. It speaks so true of the human condition, that if we accept positive change, if we compromise and cooperate with each other, then this symbolism parallels the story of the human condition, a collective understanding that says we can fix together anything that is broken and make together a better original idea.

ARTIST'S NOTES ON
YGGDRASIL
Thin delicate lines, torn paper words, dark matter where there is no shadow without light.  The light reaches the branches of the tree, reaching out like cilium, synapses of the brain, determined rivulets moving knowledge, energy, sensations, love, hate, life and death. Yggdrasil is the given name in Nordic folk law to an immense mythical and spiritually charged Ash tree. To the Vikings, this tree was the epicentre to the cosmos, of heaven and earth, yet another ubiquitous idea of the tree of life and knowledge. But an idea none the less that we can relate to as humans reaching out to improve and explore and most importantly expand our understanding of where we fit into the story of the universe and that of our own inner selves.

MELTING POT FACES

Collaboration Work By TABE

'Melting Pot' is a piece that comments metaphorically about the diverse makeup of our society and the messiness of our connections with each other physically.

The work questions stereotypes; how on a whole we are judged by genetic elements based on race, colour, gender, sexual orientation, age, healthiness, culture, wealth, fashion the list goes on.

Can such a primitive characteristic of prejudice and judgment advance the collective human condition or will it become the catalyst of our undoing as a species?

ARTIST'S NOTES ON
EYES ONLY FOR EACH OTHER
In my personal imagination of these artworks, the making of the human condition is our sense of purpose and survival. This results in a constant and intentional conflict among our collective selves and our natural environment.  Busily on the move, bodies are flying to and fro, fighting for existence, creating relationships, destroying competition, and contemplating the next step of avoiding mortality. These people are young, strong and beautiful in their own right, invariably rushing to a successful goal, an end result of dominance, winners at all cost, but inevitably the people in the painting don’t know where they are going or why.  They are unconscious of being observed inside the vortex of a womb, floating in an orbital firmament, in a world with no bottom, no upper limit, no root, no permanent place. Around and around, the floating, flying, contemplative bodies zoom seemly disengaged with one another, showing off their power and the beauty of themselves with a disconnect with where they are and how they affect the world they are in.  This is the moral compass we all face on a daily basis; to live or die at the hands of other’s actions and choices and our personal misguided attempt to control our destiny, to live forever in an unforgiving universe.

ARTIST'S NOTES ON
LOOKING GLASS
ready-made series
multimedia, on board
behind glass and wooden frame

The distortion of the work by reflection of light through the glass, gives the artwork a sense of movement and of being alive and changeable. Analogous to the clarity of seeing blurry things through a looking glass. The magic behind the Looking Glass series is that the pieces are uncomplicated, ordinary, and familiar mass manufactured objects, which are taken for granted in our day to day lives. By changing the function of the ready-made, I have modified and ultimately metamorphosed into, what I believe, are beautiful art works unique amongst themselves.

The art work encased inside the looking glass, are fragments of pieces of my thoughts, little ideas and experiments that I collect and preserve.  They are small versions of larger works that I produced for art shows, commissions or just for experimentation. The variety of genres and materials are what make these artworks unique and individual which is a far cry from their intended manufactured purpose originally was.
